Travel Insurance is Vital - Never Go Abroad Without It

In a worst case scenario lack of cover could cost you your home and your life

it just isn’t worth the risk.

If you are travelling to Europe or a Commonwealth country ensure you ALSO have a valid E111 form with you also. If you are admitted to hospital this may prevent you having to pay for treatment and then reclaim from your travel insurance. It is also a prerequiste of some travel insurance policies that you have this form with you.

Most travellers usually only find out how good their policy is when they come to make a claim. Before you purchase insurance always check your policy wording and ensure that the level of cover is appropriate to your needs. Make sure you always take your policy on holiday with you and keep it safe. Points to note are:-

It is important that you accurately declare your age and any existing medical conditions. Failure to do so will invalidate your policy.

If you intend to participate in any hazardous sports or adventurous activities, diving, canoeing, jet skiing etc. check that you are fully covered both for injuries to yourself and for injuries you may cause to others.

Should any of your luggage be lost or damaged in transit you must obtain written confirmation that you have reported the incident to your airline, tour operator etc. Most airlines have Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.) forms especially for this purpose. If your baggage is delayed you may be covered for the purchase of essential items so keep all receipts.

If you are taking jewellery, cameras or other high value items with you on holiday these are best insured on an annual basis through your household contents insurance policy. Most travel policies have strict limits on valuables.

If you are unfortunate enough to lose or have stolen any item covered under your policy you must report this to the local police within 24 hours and get a copy of the police report - however awkward this may be to obtain. The high incidence of fraudulent travel claims in recent years has forced underwriters to adopt strict rules when settling claims.

Don't leave money or other valuables in unattended vehicles or luggage if you do the chances are it won't be covered by your policy. Carry valuables in your hand luggage and keep it with you at all times. Don't leave items unattended on the beach while you go for a swim.

Should you incur medical expenses or doctors fees always ask for receipts and bring them home to support your claim.

Most travel policies are subject to excess payments where you bear the first portion of losses - check out any excesses before you purchase the policy. Or pay a small extra fee for an excess waiver.

Travel insurance is important ask our advice on the type of policy most suitable for you, bearing in mind your destination, your age and your health. If you travel three or more times per year, it may be cost effective to purchase an annual policy.
